1929 Headlines: Fire At The White House |
As we said before, there isn't much of the original White House that exists in the present structure.
Most of the West Wing and Oval Office were damaged by a fire that broke out on Christmas Eve in 1929 when President Herbert Hoover was in office.
The West Wing was originally President Thomas Jefferson's idea (circa 1801 to 1805), but the project lay idle until President Theodore Roosevelt saw it completed during his term between 1901 and 1909.
However, the Oval Office was the brainchild of President William Howard Taft who had it constructed during his term (1909 to 1913). That's a nice piece of knowledge to file away to use for Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit.
The fire destroyed many of the antique features in the White House that had been collected since 1801. Wherever possible, they were rebuilt or replaced.
