2 - President John Adams, First Lady - Abigail Adams, Vice President - Thomas Jefferson

March 4, 1801 to March 4, 1809 - Two Terms
3 - President Thomas Jefferson, First Hostess - Dolley Madison, Vice President - Aaron Burr.  

Thomas Jefferson's wife, Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson, died in 1782. His two daughters occasionally served as hostess.  Then in 1801, Jefferson asked Dolley Madison to be permanent White House hostess which she did for the rest of his two terms as well as for the two terms of her husband James Madison. Her birth was registered as "Dolley" but her given name was "Dollie" even though some biographers claim she was named after her Aunt Dorothea. 

However, when her grandniece Lucia Cutts published her memoirs, she spelled her aunt’s name as "Dolly." The spelling of her name has been a conundrum for authors for centuries.

Vice President - George Clinton from 1805 to 1809. Jefferson kept First Hostess Dolley Madison for emergencies, but for the day to day projects, Jefferson did not have a First Lady.

March 4, 1809 to March 4, 1817- Two Terms
4 - President James Madison, First Lady - Dolley Madison, Vice President - George Clinton who was re-elected with Madison. 

George Clinton died in office April 20, 1812. The Vice President position was vacant until the 1812 election. Elbridge Gerry served from March 4, 1813 until he died in office on November 23, 1814.  For the rest of Madison’s term, the position of Vice President was vacant.

5 - President James Monroe, First Lady - Elizabeth Kortright Monroe, Vice President - Daniel D. Tompkins

6 - President John Quincy Adams, First Lady - Louisa Catherine Adams, Vice President - John C. Calhoun

March 4, 1829 to March 4, 1837 - Two Terms
7 - President Andrew Jackson, no First Lady (Jackson’s wife Rachel, died three weeks before he was sworn into office).  Vice President  - John C. Calhoun (who resigned December 28, 1832 over conflicts with President Jackson).   

On March 4, 1833, Martin van Buren was sworn in as Vice President and served until the end of Jackson’s second term on March 4, 1837.

March 4, 1837 to March 4, 1841 - One Term
8 - President Martin Van Buren, First Hostess - Angelica Singleton Van Buren, Vice President - Richard M. Johnson. 

Van Buren's wife died in 1819. Various hostesses served until son Abraham Van Buren married Angelica Singleton in 1838. Abraham acted quickly to ensure she was accepted in the position.

March 4, 1841 - April 4, 1841 - Term: 31 days
9 -  President William Henry Harrison, First Lady - Anna Tuthill Harrison. Vice President - John Tyler.   President Harrison died one month after being sworn in as President.  First Lady Anna Harrison never served as First Lady. In fact, she never visited the White House.  Vice President John Tyler was sworn in as the 10th President and finished Harrison’s term.

10 - President John Tyler, First Lady - Letitia Christian Tyler (died in 1842, had 8 children), then First Lady was Julia Gardiner Tyler (married 1844, had 7 children), no Vice President during his term. He ran for re-election in 1844 but lost to James Polk.

11 - President James K. Polk, First Lady - Sarah Childress Polk, Vice President - George M. Dallas

March 4, 1849 to July 9, 1850 - One Partial Term
12 - President Zachary Taylor, First Lady - Margaret Smith Taylor, Vice President -  Millard Fillmore. 

President Taylor died on July 9, 1850 and Vice President Fillmore was sworn into office.

13 - President Millard Fillmore, First Lady - Abigail Powers Fillmore, no Vice President

March 4, 1853 - March 4, 1857 - One Term
14 - President Franklin Pierce, First Lady - Jane M. Pierce, Vice President - William R. King who served about 6 weeks, until he died of Tuberculosis on April 18, 1853. The position remained vacant for the rest of the term.

15 - President James Buchanan, no First Lady, Vice President - John C. Breckinridge

March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865 - One Full Term
16 - President Abraham Lincoln, First Lady - Mary Todd Lincoln, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin. In the 1864 election, Hamlin was dropped and Andrew Johnson was Lincoln's running mate. They won and Andrew Johnson served as Vice President until Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865.

April 15, 1865 to March 4, 1869 - One Partial Term
17 - President Andrew Johnson, First Lady - Eliza McCardle Johnson, no Vice President since Johnson was completing Lincoln’s term.

March 4,  1869 to March 4, 1877  - Two Terms
18 - President Ulysses S. Grant, First Lady - Julia Dent Grant, Vice President - Schuyler Colfax from 1869 to 1873.

One year into the job saw very little cordiality between Colfax and President Grant. Colfax announced he would not run again for any office. For the rest of his VP term, he said he felt alienated from Grant and tried to make amends. He also didn't think Grant would be elected for another term.

Colfax said he would be a candidate for Vice President in 1872 elections, but only if it was offered to him. Grant chose Henry Wilson. 

Henry Wilson served as Vice President from March 4, 1873 to November 22, 1875 when he died in office.  Grant did not offer Colfax the job. The position remained vacant until the end of Grant’s term.

19 - President Rutherford B. Hayes, First Lady - Lucy Webb Hayes, Vice President - William A. Wheeler

20 - President James A. Garfield, First Lady - Lucretia Rudolph Garfield, Vice President - Chester A. Arthur. President Garfield was assassinated on September 19, 1881 and Chester Arthur became the 21st President.

21 - President Chester A. Arthur, First Lady - Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur, no Vice President

22 - President Grover Cleveland, First Lady - Frances Folsom Cleveland, Vice President - Thomas A. Hendricks who died in office on November 25, 1885. The position remained vacant for the rest of Cleveland’s term.

23 - President Benjamin Harrison, First Lady - Caroline Scott, Vice President - Levi P. Morton Caroline Scott died in 1892; there was no First Lady for the rest of Harrison’s term. After Harrison left office, he married Mary Lord Dimmick on April 6, 1896. Contrary to some biographies, she never served as First Lady.

25 - President William McKinley served until he was assassinated on September 14, 1901, First Lady - Ida Saxton McKinley, Vice President - Garret A. Hobart died in office on November 21, 1899. The VP position was vacant from November 21, 1899 until Theodore Roosevelt was considered and accepted.

26 - President Theodore Roosevelt, First Lady - Edith Kermit Roosevelt, no Vice President until the next election in 1904. In 1905 Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks was sworn in.

27 - President William H. Taft, First Lady - Helen Herron Taft, Vice President - James S. Sherman who died in office on October 30, 1912.  The position remained vacant until the 1912 elections.

28 - President Woodrow Wilson, First Lady - Ellen Axson Wilson. Vice President - Thomas R. Marshall. Ellen Wilson died in office in 1914, President Wilson got married in 1915 to Edith Bolling Wilson who became his First Lady,

29 - President Warren G Harding, First Lady - Florence Kling Harding, Vice President - Calvin Coolidge.  Harding died in office on August 2, 1923. His VP was sworn in as President.

30 - President Calvin Coolidge, new First Lady - Grace Goodhue Coolidge, no Vice President until after the 1924 elections.  Charles G. Dawes became Vice President.

31 - President Herbert Hoover, First Lady - Lou Henry Hoover, after the 1928 elections, Charles Curtis became Vice President.

March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945  - Two Terms
32 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, First Lady - Eleanor Roosevelt, Vice President - John Nance Garner served from March 4, 1933 until January 20, 1941. Garner was considering a run for President in 1940 election, but ran for VP instead. He didn’t get enough votes for VP nomination and the party supported Henry A. Wallace who served from January 20, 1941 to January 20, 1945. For the 1944 election, FDR dropped Wallace and favored FDR/Harry S. Truman ticket. Truman served from January 20, 1945 until Roosevelt’s death on April 12, 1945, then he was sworn in as the 33rd President.

33 - President Harry S. Truman finished FDR's term, First Lady - Bess Wallace Truman, no Vice President. He won the 1948 election with Alben W Barkley who served from January 20, 1949 to January 20, 1953.

34 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower, First Lady - Mamie Eisenhower, Vice President - Richard M. Nixon

35 - President John F. Kennedy, First Lady - Jacqueline Kennedy, Vice President - Lyndon B. Johnson. He was sworn in as the 36th President after John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

36 - President Lyndon B. Johnson finished JFK’s term and ran for re-election in 1964, First Lady - Lady Bird Johnson, no Vice President until the 1964 elections. Hubert Humphrey served January 20, 1965 until January 20, 1969

37 - President Richard M. Nixon, First Lady - Pat Nixon, Vice President - Spiro Agnew. Nixon and Agnew resigned on August 9, 1974. Gerald Ford was appointed as Vice President under the 25th Amendment. He served from December 6, 1973 until Nixon resigned, then he became the 38th President.

38 - President Gerald R. Ford, First Lady - Betty Ford, no Vice President until December 19, 1974 when Nelson Rockefeller was appointed under the 25th Amendment.  Ford lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter.
